- Apple and Kodak Take Steps Toward Industry-wide Color Standard
- Apple's ColorSync Adopted For Kodak Multi-Platform Color Management Products
-
- CUPERTINO, California-- February 3, 1994-- -Apple Computer, Inc.,
- today announced that Eastman Kodak Company has adopted Apple's
- ColorSync Device Profile Format as a standard for Kodak's color
- management products, currently under license to Sun Microsystems,
- Inc., and Microsoft Corp., among others. The ColorSync Device
- Profile Format is a multi-platform, device-independent description of
- any color peripheral (scanner, monitor, printer, film recorder, etc.)
- that allows the peripheral's color capabilities to be accessed by Macintosh ,
- UNIX and Windows-based color management systems. To further advance
- ColorSync profile development and its extensions, Apple and Kodak
- have formed a ColorSync Profile Format steering committee comprised
- of major operating systems vendors and color matching modules
- suppliers.
- "This agreement between Apple and Kodak lays the groundwork for
- building a standard for an industry-wide color management," said
- Jerry Murch, director of Imaging Software for Apple's Imaging and
- Publishing Division.
- Jonathan Seybold, president of Seybold Seminars, called this
- announcement a major step forward for publishers who must manage
- color across a number of different platforms and peripherals. "The
- industry will be well-served by this agreement for a number of
- reasons: peripheral vendors will only need to supply device profiles
- in a single format; operating systems vendors will be able to optimize color
- matching capabilities; and users will achieve better
- color representations."
- A total of 32 hardware and software developers to date have reviewed
- and provided recommendations to the ColorSync specification. FOGRA,
- the German-based publishing association, has recently endorsed the
- specification as submitted by Apple in its current form.
- Apple introduced ColorSync 1.0 in May of 1992 and is currently
- working with key industry participants to develop the specifications
- for ColorSync 2.0. This new release is expected in Fall of 1994.
- Kodak has been developing color management systems and software for
- more that 10 years. Kodak Color Management Software (KCMS) provides
- consistent color from scan to print. It is based on Kodak color
- technology that is used in high-end graphics arts and prepress
- systems.
- Headquartered in Cupertino, California, Apple Computer, Inc.,
- develops, manufactures and markets personal computer, server and
- personal interactive electronic systems for use in business,
- education, home, science, engineering and government. A recognized
- pioneer and innovator in the personal computer industry, Apple does
- business in more than 120 countries around the world.
